The government has a copy. So does everyone else.
Google reported 287,014 government requests for user data worldwide in the first half of 2025, covering more than 660,000 accounts. The Department of Homeland Security's biometric identity system held over 290 million identities as of 2023, per the GAO (fingerprints, face scans, iris scans), and DHS has moved to migrate hundreds of millions of fingerprint records onto a commercial vendor's government cloud. And 1.7 billion U.S. breach-victim notices went out in 2024 alone, a 312% jump in a single year. If your data lives on someone else's server, it can be subpoenaed, breached, or seized, and you may never know.
